I'm a firm believer that every medicine cabinet should have bottles of tea tree oil in it. This essential oil has numerous healing qualities.

Keeping Tea Tree Oil In Your Medicine Cabinet

Melaleuca alternifolia, aka… Tea Tree Oil, with it’s powerful antiseptic properties, has been used for thousands of years to treat wounds.  But scientists are just beginning to realize that it also has tremendous antimicrobial properties that can kill viruses, fungi and numerous strains of bacteria.

This mighty oil has become an increasingly popular ingredient, not only in household and cosmetic products, but also toothpaste, shampoos, and even laundry detergents.

Which Tea Tree Oil Is Best?

There are any number of lotions, creams and moisturizers that list tea tree oil as an ingredient, but you want to buy 100% pure tea tree oil.  I’ve used Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Oil for years.

Definitely want tea tree oil in your medicine cabinet

  1.  Treating acne:
Tea tree oil works well as a home remedy for treating acne. Apply a drop to a q-tip and rub on acne spots. This solution is just as effective as the top drugstore acne remedy, benzoyl peroxide.

Because of its ability to kill fungal infections and parasites, this oil is great to use on toenail fungus, ringworm and warts. Apply and rub in directly on the area, twice a day. You should see results in about 30 days.

6.  Athlete’s foot powder
You can make your own athlete’s foot powder using it, arrowroot powder, and baking soda. Using a fork, mix 1/4 cup each of arrowroot powder and baking soda, and 20 drops of oil in a bowl. When mixed well, transfer the powder to a shaker.  At least twice a day, apply the powder to dry feet.   Store your shaker in a cool, dark place.

7. It kills mold:
Diffusing the oil in a room will kill mold spores and other bad bacteria. You can also spray your shower curtains, dishwasher, even your washing machine.

8. Oral health:
Thursday Plantation offers a great toothpaste… or you can make a paste of coconut oil, baking soda and 5 drops of the oil.  Brush as you would normal toothpaste.

10.  Fights cancer:
Joint Australian and American research reported in Journal of Dermatological Science in 2012 found that tumor-bearing mice given a combination of melaleuca alternifolia and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) activated an immune response and resulted in tumor cell death.

Two, 2010 Australian studies with mice found that tea tree oil and its major active terpene component, terpinen-4-ol, had anti-tumor activity against two cancer cell lines: mesothelioma and melanoma. Researchers stated that tea tree oil “significantly inhibited the growth” of these two tumor cell types.

Chinese researchers in 2009 reported that tea tree oil had both antimicrobial and anti-cancer effects. They found that it exhibited strong toxicity against human lung cancer cells, human breast cancer cells and human prostate cancer cells.

In 2004, Italian researchers investigated tea tree oil against human melanoma cells, as well as Adriamycin-resistant melanoma cells… it induced apoptosis (planned cell death, lacking in cancer cells) against both cell lines but especially the Adriamycin-resistant cells.

NOTEIt is not advisable to use any essential oil as a sole therapy for cancer, or for any of the other health concerns mentioned in this article. When used in combination with other conventional and alternative medical treatments, however, essential oils can be very effective in helping the body heal.

If you haven’t used tea tree oil before, try it… keep it in your bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom. I have bottles of it in almost every room of our home, and even a small bottle in my purse.  You can buy it here

  1. Great article. I use tea tree for just about any problem I have. Even use it for the kids and husband.

  2. We do not use toothpaste with fluoride because I am allergic to it and it just is not healthy. Recently I had been having a little more trouble with cavities than normal and my dental hygienist told us to find a natural toothpaste with tea tree oil in it. We can already tell a big difference in our breath on a daily basis. Can’t wait to see what next appointment is like. Thanks for sharing this information. Makes me feel much better about our decision to use tea tree oil
